A motel that left almost no trace. Except this.

This is a vintage Bel Aire Motel promotional glass piece from San Francisco, California — a distinctive rounded-square form with scalloped/wavy border, bearing a red and white mid-century modern logo in bold graphic lettering. Circa 1950s–1960s. One available.

The Bel Aire Motel of San Francisco is one of those establishments that history largely passed over — we located postcards showing the building and sign, but documentary records of its history proved elusive. What survives is this: a glass piece with a logo that is pure mid-century confidence — clean geometric sans-serif lettering, red and white, the kind of graphic design that the American roadside produced at its most assured. The form is equally distinctive: rounded corners with a scalloped, wavy border that gives it an organic, almost decorative quality unusual in promotional glass of the period. Some wear to the red pyro lettering, consistent with age and use.

The obscurity of the property is itself part of the appeal — this is the kind of piece that serious travel memorabilia collectors pursue precisely because so little of it survived. If you have information on the Bel Aire Motel, we would genuinely love to hear it.

A wonderful piece for a San Francisco history collector, a California travel memorabilia enthusiast, or anyone drawn to the graphic beauty of mid-century American roadside design.
